Learning as we grow - Cover Crops

COVER CROPS

This year, we chose 2 plots to amend the soil through planting cover crops. Planted a combination of wheat berries and buckwheat.

Covered with netting to deter deer from feasting on the greens.

Quick growth.

Chopped down before buckwheat bloomed. Left to compost.
Extremely easy to turn under, nice and loose soil.

Next we will sow fall rye to leave over the winter as a perennial and chop, drop and turn under in early spring or late winter. Leave 3 weeks before any sowing of seeds, due to the allelopathic effect of fall rye. Great for suppressing weeds!
