Growing Relationships with
Village Brewery & ATB Financial

Our hop plants have struggled through, this year was the first that we actually produced the hop flower, seed cones, on the hop plant. This year the plants were protected from the lawnmower and the weeds from growing in, after wood edging was installed last year.

THIS YEAR 3 new hop plants were added, you can see the seed cone growth on the plants the established plants. Thank you Catherine for picking up our new pants from Village Brewery and Dave for taking such good care of them this year.

NEXT YEAR we are predicting a bumper crop to be included in the VILLAGE GARDENER

BIG SHOUT OUT to Village Brewery and ATB Financial in supporting local community gardens. Thank you for helping us to continue to grow.

Learning as we grow - Cover Crops

This year, we chose 2 plots to amend the soil through planting cover crops. Planted a combination of wheat berries and buckwheat.

Covered with netting to deter deer from feasting on the greens.

Quick growth.

Chopped down before buckwheat bloomed. Left to compost.
Extremely easy to turn under, nice and loose soil.
Next we will sow fall rye to leave over the winter as a perennial and chop, drop and turn under in early spring or late winter. Leave 3 weeks before any sowing of seeds, due to the allelopathic effect of fall rye. Great for suppressing weeds!
